Facebook puts a 'pause' on Instagram Kids initiative #FinanceUSA #StockMarketNEWS
Facebook Inc. announced in a Monday blog post that it was putting a "pause" on efforts to create a version of Instagram for kids under 13. The pause "will give us time to work with parents, experts, policymakers and regulators, to listen to their concerns, and to demonstrate the value and importance of this project for younger teens online today," said Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, in the post. Users have to be 13 to create Instagram accounts, but Mosseri said that many "tween" users were "misrepresenting their age" and making accounts anyway. Facebook had been planning to create an ad-free Instagram experience for tweens that would allow parents to supervise how their children spend time on the app and who they follow. The move faced opposition from a bipartisan group of 44 attorneys general, and Facebook more generally has come under fire for the impact of its platforms on younger users. Mosseri said in the blog post that those critical of the Instagram Kids initiative may view this announcement "as an acknowledgement that the project is a bad idea," which is "not the case," in his view. "The reality is that kids are already online, and we believe that developing age-appropriate experiences designed specifically for them is far better for parents than where we are today," he continued. The company's pause is intended to help Instagram "get it right." Shares of Facebook have gained about 3% over the past three months as the S&P 500 has risen 4%.
